It’s too bad this book wasn’t published during summer, because it can make a cute summer read. But then again, us living in Canada sure need books to make us feel warm during winter as well. So no worries. You’ll hopefully enjoy this whatever season you’re in.About the story, it’s light, though it does deal with meaningful matters/themes – cheating, lying, education and relationships.HOWEVER, and this annoyed me, the author doesn’t develop them all in dept. You’ll notice, the book is pretty sort – 260 pages – and, like I said, it’s fairly light, so my opinion is that the author should have eliminated some of those meaningful matters/themes and focused on the remaining ones in much more detail.BUT, the main character has a young voice, so this will appeal to a 13-year-old-ish audience.Because of that, I can’t say I blame this book for not having immense dept, as I do think the matters and themes it explores are prevalent in our society and worthy of appearing in this teen novel, despite their not satisfying me. It’s a good story that I absolutely breezed through (it’s entirely fast-paced) and I was relatively curious about what would happen next, especially with Viv’s father and her future education-wise.Adorable cover. | | | | |

So this is the book I expected: an over-stressed, over-worked, high school perfectionist with trust issues learns to open up to "Mr. Right" and live in the moment. That's not the book I got. This book is not a typical YA romance. In fact, it's not really a romance at all. This is a book about struggling to keep things together when your life is falling spectacularly apart.Viviana has . It goes deeper than the humiliation she feels from her first love spreading around her nude selfies in retaliation for their break up. This incident puts her in the hospital with a severe case of anxiety. Viviana's parents put enormous pressure on her to get into an elite college, and her father is livid that the nude pics might bar her from Stanford (how?). In fact, her father is so disappointed he's moved out of the home and gone off to Singapore. If that weren't enough pain, Viviana also struggles to repair her relationship with her mother. Then she learns the truth about her father, and it's something that would land even the most well-adjusted person into a lifetime of therapy. With all this going on, she learns her best friend, Sammie, is moving away, and they spend much of their last summer together fighting over a boy. Then there's a mentally ill professor living in their apartment complex who somehow is going to teach a bunch of teens some important life lessons (sigh). From the romance drama, to the family drama, to the best friend drama, to the sister drama... this book feels like a collage. A bunch of plot bits slapped together with glue into something that's not altogether horrible to look at but is undeniably cluttered. Each chapter starts with headers about studying for SATs, entrance essays to college, ect.-- I skipped past those.Something needed to give with this book. Removing one or more of the story elements and going further into depth with the remaining could have made this a much better novel, IMO.Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for giving me a copy of this book.

I loved the cover for this book and with the promise of coming of age with a slight romance in the mix, I thought it would be for me. While it was an ok read plus I read it in a couple of hours it didn't blow me away, so due to this, I would have to give two and a half stars.Viv is obsessed with being perfect, with her parents breathing down her neck to always hit perfect grades and make good life choices, suddenly she finds herself lost. With a scandal involving her ex-boyfriend and some x-rated pictures brings her world tumbling down the only person she can trust is her best friend. After she has a small accident causing her to have a blackout due to stress her parents decide she is to take it easy this summer instead of the time away she had planned, so when her bestie gets Viv a job with her at their apartment complex pool for summer it's going to be fun... right?I feel there was too much happening in the book too quick for it to be so short, plus I would never do what Viv did to her best friend, really? Would you risk a friendship of a lifetime for someone you don't know You knew what was going to happen there instantly as the story progressed. As for everything else it was just a bit all over the place, I don't get why some parts were even put in the book. I did love the parts where they would make up stories about their neighbours, myself and my friends used to do this when we were younger which brings back some hilarious memories.I didn't really connect with any of the characters, yeah they were cute and preppy but they never made an imprint on me which is a shame. I feel that Viv's parents were completely out of order, I don't know if it's because I'm so close to both my mum and dad and they always just want me to be happy. As for the x-rated pictures, most people and have been there and done it, it's the type of world we live in today so I totally felt her pain even though it hasn't happened to me but a similar occurrence has graced my presence in my younger years.I'm glad that I read the book as I wasn't disappointed, it just wasn't for me, but I can see why people would like. Young romance readers would love this!

Ever since I read How To Be Brave last autumn, I have been waiting for Mrs. Kottaras' next novel, and she does not disappoint. Her writing is spot on once again, if not even better than what she showcased in her debut. This time around Mrs. Kottaras brings us a story about trying to overcome traumatic experiences and learning to love yourself, that is filled with relatable characters. I was hooked from chapter one, and I would've finished it in one sitting if it wasn't for reality getting in the way. It's brilliantly executed, I loved every bit.

3.5 starsI really liked the premise of this and was quite eager to get to it. I liked Vivi well enough. She's smart and is dealing with a lot of personal things. I enjoyed being in her head and reading her figure things out. Sammie and Evan were interesting characters, and I absolutely loved Vivi's little sister, Mila. The idea of a slice of time usually irritates me, but it really works with this story. And man, there are a lot of things that happen. Some of it is good, some of it is bad, some of it is ridiculously dramatic. Overall, it was a quick and mostly cute read. I'll definitely keep a look out for future works by this author. **Huge thanks to St. Martin's Griffin and NetGalley for providing the arc in exchange for an honest review**

I was really excited for the format, but in the end it just turned out to be an excuse for clunky backstory/expositional passages (e.g. Let me tell you: All About My Best friend) which seemed more like a 'previously in my life' catch up before the main event. I'm not sure how well the format of college tips and advice even worked in the latter half of the story when it was more about Vivi ='s family issues rather than her stressing out over college. Also, best friends fighting over a boy? NOOOOO. Had I known this was going to be a part of the story, I probably wouldn't have read it. It's ridiculously problematic. Lastly, I found Vivi to be 100% too melodramatic. There's one bit where she's in an argument with a guy and she completely yells at him and then is all like 'I can't do this anymore' and jumps into the pool with all her clothes on and swims about a bit. It's not like she ran away. Everyone that was involved in the conversation can still see her and is probably thinking 'what the heck?' right now. (Plus, I prose was so eye-roll inducing sometimes, full of sentences like 'I can't take it anymore', 'I'm done', 'I'm broken and no one can fix this,' layered on top of each other.) She was always running away from her problems instead of having good communication and not freaking out.

*ARC provided by St. Martin's in exchange for an honest review*This was my first read by E. and I have definitely become a big fan! This book follows Viviana, who is an academic overachiever. Her life has taken a turn for the worst after a certain 'incident' arose and she has to try and keep it together while everything crumbles around her. Her summer plans fall through so her best friend, Sammie, gets her a job at the community pool along with her. My heart honestly twisted painfully through most of this story. Viviana didn't deserve any of the things she was experiencing and it hurt to witness them. I loved how she managed to help others even when she was falling apart inside. Her character development was phenomenal and she deals with things that can be easily relatable. Forces beyond her control kept tackling her but she ended up being one of the strongest heroines I've read about. I adored her friendship with Sammie. Their loyalty towards each other was more than palpable and there was no room to doubt them. My respect for their friendship was, and is, off the charts. It's not often that such a reliable friendship shows up in books. Usually, I don't enjoy books this much when the romance isn't a prominent factor, but I'm glad to say that it worked for the best. My heart may be healing from the blows it took but I still loved the story. Not only is this about coming of age, but it also stresses the fact that even adults make mistakes. And unfortunately, some of them you can't come back from. This book tackled family drama in a way that I haven't read before. Because of that, it left me tearing up when certain secrets came to light. They hit a sore spot within me and it wasn't difficult to step into the shoes of the wronged. I really enjoyed E.'s writing style. She worded certain life events into essay questions and it was a nice change of pace. I read this book in one sitting (on a roadtrip to the bay area, actually) and it was difficult to say bye. I wanted the story to keep on going and going but of course, it didn't. This was an easy read but not easy to swallow. 4.5/5 stars!

The Best Possible Answer really surprised me! This book is all about overcoming difficulties and contains a main character who overworks herself. I didn’t know that it would be set at a pool, one of my favourite locations ever! I loved the mix of fun and seriousness and would recommend it if you are a fan of the same thing. This book is all about dealing with hardship. After her ex leaks pictures of her, she overworks herself to the point of being hospitalized, and her parents announce divorce, Viviana takes the summer to calm down and work at the local pool. I loved how this book is light yet deals with serious topics and sadness. There is also a big theme of friendship and family, which is one of my favourite things in books. I would say that this book is perfect for curling up with on a rainy day.Viviana is an interesting character who I really sympathized with. She deals with so much stress in her life and her family situation doesn’t help. I feel like AP students and academic overachievers will be able to relate to her, even if the situation is on the more extreme side. I admired Viviana’s determination to get through her issues and her ability to recognize that she should change her ways and not strive for perfection all the time.I adored the setting in The Best Possible Answer. The book is set at an apartment building with a pool where Viviana works. In the building and across the street are these quirky neighbours that Viviana and her friends create backstories for. The pool is one of my favourite places to be and I was thrilled when it was introduced. Although it’s fall, it is still nice to read about summer and days in the sun.The Best Possible Answer is a fun yet intense book with a perfectionist main character. I loved the setting of the pool and the summer vibes. I would recommend this book to those who like their contemporaries more on the serious side.

This was one of the best books I ever read I couldn't out it down. This book is about a girl named Viviana who did something she wasn't supposed to and after that ended up getting hurt and her mother wants to hover over her so closely to make sure she doesn't do it again and to make sure she isn't still hurt. Viviana soon goes to work euth with her best friend Sammie and meets a boy named Evan. This book is filled with exposed secrets and family fights I recommend this book for all.

I saw this on a Goodreads giveaway and I was intrigued due to the cover and story title. This has got to be one of my most anticipated YA reads for 2016. I'm gutted that I am 2.5 weeks too young to enter the giveaway for a copy because from reading the summary, I'm hooked.November is so far away... :(

Read more of my reviews on or follow me on Hmmm... this one had its moments, but didn't do it for me 100%. There were a whole lot of plot elements and for me they didn't all work together. It's the summer before Viviana's senior year, and she's got a plan: spend the summer at an engineering academy, SAT prepping, etc. But her crippling anxiety attacks start getting in the way. Her shifting relationships with her absent, high-achieving father and her best friend, who likes the same guy as Viviana, have her seriously off-balance. As Viviana's plans start to crumble, she begins to question her goals, and who she wants to be. It seems to me that would be enough plot for a book (and the chapter headings modeled after standardized testing were clever and funny). But then there was material for almost two more books smashed in there - some backstory about Viviana sending naked pictures of herself to an ex, backstory that was used as a reason for Viviana's anxiety attacks. I didn't really think this added anything to the story and was sort of perplexing to me. Because it happened before the book begins, the reader isn't really sure what happened or why. Viviana seems like such a responsible, level-headed person, with her endless college to-do list, that this seemed really out of character, and the book didn't really explain why she did this. Much later in the book she says something bizarre, like "when when I love, I love with all my heart" (and naked pictures, apparently.) The nudie pix incident was also used to explain trust issues she had with the new guy (the ex shared the pictures, which were supposed to be private) but for me that just muddled the issue that Viviana was falling in love with a guy she knew her best friend Sammi had feelings for. Then a big part of the plot has to do with Viviana's parents. Her mother has had health issues, and her father is sort of inexplicably off in Singapore. Without spoilers, I think that this storyline could have stayed if the SAT stuff went. But to me, all of these elements didn't really work together: college, nude pics, anxiety, best friend triangle, parent drama. Plus there was this whole thing about an eccentric professor that was interesting, but again, I think it might have belonged in a different book.tl;tr Interesting plot elements, but for me, too many of them in one book.

3.5 liked it a lot I wanted to read The Best Possible Answer because I liked the sound of Vivi. I am drawn to books about anxiety, young people making mistakes and how they learn from them, and the complicated family dynamics that it hints at. Vivi is it dealing with panic attacks at the beginning of the book and her mom has finally realize how much stress she's only trying to do so much and be so much as an honor student and although she is trying to encourage her to slow down part of the problem is that she won't admit what else is going on with Vivi. We know from the synopsis that her boyfriend had leaked some pictures of her and it really affected her in a lot of ways and her mom just wants to look at the school aspect of it and tell her to calm down instead of trying to face the emotional pain that she's facing with that. As far as family dynamics that's pretty complicated as well. Her dad is not living with them and not on good terms with her mom even though her mom just dealt with thyroid cancer and well things are looking okay she's still got a lot of uncertainties. Vivi has a younger sister who looks up to her a lot and wants to be closer. When her mom takes away the normal academic summer camp that she usually goes to that one chance to and it also brings her new friends into the picture. Vivi's father is a story unto himself. He has a lot of secrets, and he has hurt those around him in a lot of ways. Vivi figures out some of the things that he was hiding, and it only adds to her confusion and identity issues. I liked the friendship aspect in this one as well. Vivi and her best friend Sammie live in the same building and they have been friends for years. They've always been close, but their own family issues that left them hurting have allowed them to bond even more and know that someone else understands. I do wish that the whole aspect of both of them liking the same guy wouldn't have been there, but it did allow for a lot of character growth and for them to look at their relationship and how to work on it. I liked the story line, how Vivi realized a lot about herself, her life, her plans for the future, and how she interacts with others. She wasn't in the best place at the beginning but she certainly learned a lot and while the main story lines were tied up, she still had a lot of room to grow, make choices, and move on with both old and new friends.Source: earc from Netgalley via St. Martin'sDisclaimer: I received this book as an ARC (advanced review copy). I am not paid for this review, and my opinions in this review are mine, and are not affected by the book being free.Bottom Line: Good read, had decent emotional connection, and complex family dynamics.

Is this book:A) about family, family implosion and how to ride the chaos of familyB) a story of strong friendship and how it can hold you together C) about second chances and learning to trust yourself againD) a fun story of summer friendship and romanceE) all of the above"Hint: test-prep research shows that you should actually always pick E."It is funny how a writing style can change everything. In anyone else's hands this novel could have been run of the mill. But instead it is a charming book of friendship, family and mistakes and secrets that shake one's trust in others. I was charmed from the first page. I loved the chapter headers. I loved how this wasn't a simple romance where love fixes everything, but instead a story of what love is, how it hurts and when it is worth the risk to reach out and trust another person, whether that's a romantic interest, your best friend, your family members or yourself. Viviana Rabinovich-Lowe (love her name!) desires perfection. Grades, SAT prep, college applications, future career choice, social life to study balance. Everything must be orchestrated to keep her father happy. But when this story starts Viviana's perfection has already fallen to pieces around her. Her father has left. Her grades are in shambles. She is having panic attacks, her mother can't look her in the eye, she is the talk of the school and her ex-boyfriend spread private photos around that will kill any chance of her gaining acceptance into Stanford. Viviana might start the summer wanting to hide under the covers of her bed, but her best friend Sammie convinces her to get a job with her at the local pool. There she meets a new group of teens - ones that don't know anything about the photo, her grades or where she wants to go to college. Evan is particularly cute and seemingly very interested in Viviana. But Viviana doesn't want to risk trusting a boy ever again, especially not one her best friend has a crush on. There are plenty more complications, but the heart of this story remains Viviana's discovery of her family's secrets, how she shares this story with her best friend and new friends, and how she learns to cope with her past and future. Trust is a huge theme in this book. The Best Possible Answer was a quick and fun book to read with a positive message of starting again. Read this in one sitting and liked it a lot. The whole test/study guide preparation thing worked really well for me, and Kottaras just has a way of writing heroines I find so relatable. Cute romance, great BFF, compelling family-centric storyline... definitely recommend and honestly wish it'd been out in time to be a summer beach read, because even with its heavier stuff it just felt so perfect for that.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion. I was first drawn to this book because of the adorable cover and the promise of what I thought would be a coming of age story combined with a cute love story. Unfortunately, I did not get what I had expected. The writing is solid, and I liked that it lightly touched upon mental issues and typical problems that teenagers face, but I couldn't connect with this story or the characters. The book opens with Viv obsessed with being perfect, as per her father's design, but a few wrong moves with a boy she loved and trusted and everything she worked for started slipping away from her. After the scandal involving Viv and her ex, her father moved away from her family out of shame. I thought this was completely ridiculous that her father was that obsessed with perfection that he drove his own child insane and eventually into the arms of a boy who pretended to be what she needed at the time. The truth about her father is revealed later in the story. I also didn't like that she had such a poor relationship with her mother and constantly felt like it was up to her to repair it when the mother should've cared more about her child. It was like everyone blamed this girl for their problems. Then there's Viv's best friend who gets mad at her as soon as the boy she likes at work starts flirting with Viv instead of her. This part of the book was very tiring, even though the book is a quick read, but the constant drama that doesn't amount to much was very tiring by the mid point of the story. They spend their last summer together fighting over a guy, which serves no purpose. And let's not forget the weird professor who lives in their apartment complex and comes to the pool in an attempt to teach the kids about life. This part was super weird. I did not get this at all. There was way too much happening in this book that it felt forced and awkward.Mental health issues are addressed, with Viv having panic attacks after the scandal at school, leading her to become institutionalized for a short period of time. She has attacks often enough that you get to see how she responds in certain situations, but I didn't think this part of the story was properly developed. And then I sighed at the thought of using the boy of her dreams as her night in shining armor to make her all better. Puh-lease! There's nothing I hate more than the idea of using romance to make someone who has mental problems better. This doesn't work in real life. And then when they break up she goes off the deep end and we're supposed to think oh she's better now. I don't think so! I do not like when romance is used to "help" with mental issues. I couldn't connect with any of this story. I really wanted to love this book, but I think it's about a three star book for me, and I personally wouldn't recommend it to contemporary YA fiction lovers. If someone asked me if they should give it a try, I would probably recommend a different YA book, but I also wouldn't discourage them from reading it. This is neither a Rant or a Rave for me.I'll post this as a mini review next week on my blog: rantandraveaboutbooks.com

This was quite a mixed read for me, despite it being my favourite genre, YA. The author is new to me and whilst she does write well, I failed to connect fully with the character of Viviana. Viviana is a complex young person emerging into womanhood. She has severe anxiety, in part, due to the stresses of parental separation and betrayal by her first boyfriend. I did feel for Vivi in regards to her anxiety but I found observing her somewhat tense and a little stressful! Vivi has a mother who I did not like and for a while, an absent father. When I finally got the measure of her father, boy, he was pretty unlikeable too; poor Vivi. There was a friend, Sammie who I really liked. The story line in this book didn't really grab me until the latter half, but I did feel the need to know some answers to questions. There were a couple of twists that I didn't see coming and I enjoyed where that took the story. I would definitely read this author again.A copy of this book was provided by the publisher through Netgalley.Reviewed for Jo&IsaLoveBooks Blog.

This was my first young adult book, and I enjoyed it. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more from this author. The author potrays the main character viviana in important parts of her life. Taking exams, trying to get into a good college and dating and to top it all off her family have all the dramas as well. it's a lot to cope with, she has a good support system in Sammie her best friend and Evan. It's interesting to see the outcome of all the trials and tribulations of her life. Thanks goes to net galley and the publishers for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

There's just SO MUCH happening and it's all pretty heavy stuff (cancer, divorce, affairs, panic attacks, leaked nude photos, etc) but because these topics are all crammed into one book, not enough time/emphasis is spent on each issue/story and the book definitely suffers for it. I do understand I'm in the minority here and plenty of other early readers have fallen in love with this one. Unfortunately, just wasn't for me.For the full review and more, head over to !

This book was absolutely amazing. I truly loved it. I honestly can't think of the last time I made the time to read a book in a day (which is really sad), but that's what happened with The Best Possible Answer. I won an Advanced Reader Copy from a Goodreads giveaway.I really like E. Katherine Kottaras' style. She has a way writing heartbreak in so that it feels real without going too far over the top. This novel is really about what happens when perfectionist Viviana, a high-achieving student, realizes that both she and her world can't be perfect. THE BEST POSSIBLE ANSWER shows what happens teens are put under too much pressure to perform and I like the fact that the book gives Viviana the time and space to slow down, have fun and find herself. It also shows teens that if you mess up once, it's not the end of your world or the end of your life. My only critical note is that one of the most fascinating characters in the book is Viviana's father. He's given some of the best lines but allowed to remain something of an enigma. Even though a lot of this book takes place over the summer, it's not quite a beach read. I curled up with it on a stormy afternoon and it was perfect. If you liked HOW TO BE BRAVE, you will definitely love this.

I was able to read this book as an uncorrected proof through my work. This was a good story for me. It had a little bit of everything that I enjoy in a realistic teen fiction book. Viviana’s life is spiraling out of control. Her parents are separating which is one step away from divorce, her now ex-boyfriend showed everyone the sexy picture she had taken of herself for him and on top of that she can’t go to the engineering camp which means she’ll never get into her father’s Alma Mater which means that life as she knows it is over. Now with a wide open summer she and her best friend get jobs at the local pool checking in members, and checking out the hot guys. Not really how she pictured her summer going but it might give her time to fix her life. But sometimes there are things that are more broken than you know, and things that you just can’t fix. A really good realistic teen book aimed at girls ages 13 on up.

We chose this book on a whim This book is made up of some really good things and some not so really good things. We’re going to start with the good first.Viviana Robinovich-Lowe has a really nice voice. She views life slightly differently to most people and we found it really interesting to read things from her perspective. She has an analytical mind that creates a certain thought pattern, but she also has many similarities to how the majority think. She struggles to understand her emotions at times and occasionally falls into the pitying mindset of a regular teenager. This isn’t a bad thing, in fact it’s a very good thing because of how her life is falling apart around her.We get to see Viviana navigate a changing landscape both at home with her family and outside of the home with friend Sammie. It was enjoyable to read about a character who despite all her carefully laid plans had a reckless side which led to an impulsive decision that is the backbone of this book. Her sending of racy pictures to her boyfriend and her boyfriend, who is her ex-boyfriend by the beginning of this novel releasing them.Due to the author’s decision to write in first person we get close up and personal to how something such as revenge porn (that’s what it’s called now yes?) affects a person’s life in so many ways. The Best Possible Answer isn’t just about a girl (Viviana) meeting a boy (Evan) and the ensuing romance which fixes absolutely everything despite how improbable and totally unrealistic that actually is. No. This book is about friendship and family and imperfections. The relationship between Viviana and Sammie is for the most part, amazing. Both Vivi and Sammie have been through rough times and they’ve both been there for each other. They’re true friends who braid each other’s hair and much more. Sammie it’s worth noting is a comedy goldmine and some of the lines written for her by the author had us choking on our drink. She’s truly a brilliant character. The description talks about a perfect family life falling apart. It doesn’t however talk about the fact that there’s always more going on in such a family. It doesn’t mention the mother who’s name we’ve forgotten…..or little Mila, Viviana’s younger sister who’s extremely smart and also suffering.E.Katherine Kottaras weaves them both into the story and shows how they too are experiencing the negativity that comes along with familial destruction. We found it quite refreshing actually. When we started reading this book we were fearful as we always are when a book set in the contemporary genre has a synopsis that mentions only the names of a boy and a girl. We were fearful that this book would have two major problems (at least from our perspective they’re problems)Girl meets boy. Becomes instantly infatuated with boy. Infatuation is reciprocated and BOOM! Boy becomes the one and only.Girl meets previously mentioned boy who her best-friend obviously likes and the friendship that existed long before the boy walked into said girl’s life crumbles to dust. This book unfortunately falls into to both of these problems quite quickly. It’s almost like a free fall that you know won’t stop until you’re halfway through the book and you’re ready to throw it at the wall. And never look at it. Ever. Again. We know this is starting to sound predominantly negative, but bare with us. We’re not done yet. Even though this book does encounter said problems and did manage to irritate us for a time, it spirals right out of them eventually.Evan despite being an okay character and an okay love interest didn’t become the love of Viviana’s life. Viviana and Sammie worked through their conflicted emotions and remained best friends. Now the reason we mentioned all of that at this point in our review is because we know some of you might not be able to read this book because of what we’ve just mentioned. That’s okay. The Best Possible Answer has some really interesting twists and revelations. They’re not entirely shocking but they’re perfectly in line with the broken family theme of the story, we quite liked that. It’s a book that is light while simultaneously having some darker aspects which provide contrast and stop this book from feeling unrealistic. It’s by no means perfect, but we can’t help but feel as if that’s because the book revolves around accepting imperfections. What we’re saying is….this isn’t our favourite book and it never will be, but when we’re in the right mood/mindset we’ll happily read this book again.

I received this book through a giveaway contest. I was honored to receive this book and read it. Reading this book, I feel like it is perfect book for a young teenager interested in drama and love. As for me, this story lacked depth, and adventure. Good book for young readers however not for me.

Another Giveaway from Goodreads. It was ok. Hard to believe these teenagers were so good. No smoking or drinking, barely cursing. Almost how I grew up back in the 60's, when life was easy and good.

Thank you so much to Raincoast Books for sending me a copy of this book for an honest review. As always, all opinions are my own.Well ladies and gentlemen, I have a new favourite book. Here it is!This book follows Viviana, a 16 year old stressing about everything. Doing well on her AP exams, going to an engineering academy for the summer to hone her skills to be accepted into Stanford for engineering, like her father, just being perfect in general. But when she collapses from exhaustion, coupled with her less than perfect behaviour, including sending a scandalous photo to her then-now-ex boyfriend, who decided he wasn't the only one fit to see it, her parents decide to cancel the engineering academy. So Viviana is stuck, trying to forget what happened at school and stave off the next panic attack. Her best friend Sammie gets her a job at the pool by their apartment building and she meets Evan for the second time (the first was four years ago, playing seven minutes in heaven (more like 15 seconds) at a party; although they both kind of forgot about the other). Viviana is not looking for anything, so when Sammie expresses interest in Evan, she tells her to go for it.There is a lot of stuff happening at home too. Viviana's parents are getting divorced, her father has been in "Singapore" on business for 6 months and her mother's gone back to school to try and get a degree to help support Viviana and her little sister, Mila. I won't say anything else about the plot because there is a twist that you just need to experience yourself.I really loved Viviana's character, she was so convinced she had to do everything a certain way, and when something bad happened, even if it wasn't, she would constantly convince herself it was her fault. The author depicts her panic attacks very real and raw, and I was really intrigued by the way Mila reacted to Viviana. She was her role model, and there was one heartbreaking part where Mila drew a family portrait, but was so upset she couldn't get Viviana's arms right, she erased and re-drew it many times, before finally ripping it up because it wasn't perfect. This really showed how obsessive their family life had become. I think being the child of a first generation immigrant also had an effect on Viviana and her sister, their mother came to Chicago from the former Soviet Union when she was a teenager to make a better life for herself. The twist threw me for such a loop - I was not expecting that. It was hard for me personally to read, because it brought up a lot of stuff from my past, but I cannot even begin to imagine how that must have felt for Viviana and her family, especially her mother. While I don't necessarily agree with her choices getting to that point, I do think she is making the right decisions now.I will say that this isn't the romance I was expecting. Yes, there is a little bit, mainly towards the end, but this story as a whole is about Viviana accepting who she is and figuring out what to do with her life. It's much deeper than falling for a cute lifeguard. As the saying goes, she has to learn to love herself before she can let others in.It is set in the summer time, and most of the events take place at the pool where the girls work for the summer, but I still think it is a good read any time of the year, especially if your winters are anything like mine, and you need some metaphorical sunshine in your life. There were just so many little things that were so well thought out and worked beautifully in this story. Viviana and Sammie having Binocular and Braiding Sessions, I could just see them sitting together, braiding each others hair, making up stories about their neighbours, what they're lives are life, what they're eating for dinner. Just little seemingly insignificant parts of the book that really round things out.Overall, if it wasn't clear already, I loved this book and highly recommend you pick it up!

**You can see this full review and more at Book Briefs: **The Best Possible Answer by E. Katherine Kottaras is a young adult standalone contemporary. I think a lot of high school students will be able to relate to some aspect of the story and of Viviana's character. I really enjoyed this story. There were some things I absolutely loved, and there were a few things I thought detracted from the flow of the story. Overall, it was a very good book, and I think a lot of people will really enjoy the story and be able to relate to it.Let's start with the things I liked. I was able to put myself in Viviana's shoes pretty easily. (for the most part.) I was an overachiever in high school too and I was very concerned with grades and doing everything perfect. Everything seems like such a big deal back then. One bad test score could ruin my GPA and ruin my chances at college or at scholarships, etc. I got what she was going through. And with the pressure of getting into a good school even greater than it has been in the past, I feel like a lot of people will be able to relate to the stress Viviana is under. I also loved that each of chapters started out in the form of a multiple choice question to show something Viviana was going through in her life. It was hilarious and so very accurate for standardized testing answers. Which made it even funnier. I also really liked the overall plot line. There are some of the smaller side plots that I thought took away from the overall flow of the story, but in general I really liked the journey Viviana went on.And now for the things I didn't love so much. I thought there was a lot going on. Some was very relevant to the story and some of it seemed surprising and out of place. Any one of these issues might have been ok on their own, and would have been a very nice complement to the stresses Viviana was under, but taken all together it seemed like a bit too much. I don't want to say what they are , but if you would like a spoiler you can see what I mean here--> There is a lot going on in the sidelines of this story. I wish we would have picked one or two of those things and worked them into the story, but not all of them. As it was, it all worked well together but it did have my head spinning a bit as the reader.Bottom line: I really liked Viviana, and her friend, and the writing for this story is excellent. I loved how relateable Viviana seemed. I think many readers will love The Best Possible Answer for that very reason. I loved all of the standardized test humor and questions that were woven into the story. I do think there were too many things going on in the subplots. It detracted from my enjoyment of the story, but not by much. Overall, The Best Possible Answer was a great read.
