Writes about Read Online Florence Nightingale: The Courageous Life of the Legendary Nurse Book PDFA fantastic biography accessible for any reader that showcases the world that Florence Nighingale had to live in in order to be the most famous and legendary nurse that she is known as today. This biography focuses on the feelings of the family and society during her maturation and how adamant they were that she NOT follow her interests and passion though everyone commented on her smarts and abilities. But she endured and as she mentioned in several letters, no one wanted to see her leave the home because that's where a woman should be and shamed her for it, but they also didn't want her to be on the battlefield but praised her for that-- basically she couldn't win. Society needed to make up their damn minds, but how she pushed through and followed her passion and interest remind me somewhat of Temple Grandin. I enjoyed the perspective of the story and how it showcased how Nightingale's mind worked. I was particularly fascinated by the awards bestowed upon her from a statistical society as she worked later in life from her bedroom and used pie charts and graphs to demonstrate her point in a quick and easy manner for all. I love that she wielded the "Nightingale power" where she basically was never really paid to do the work but affected change through the government and military. They relied on her work to make positive changes and save lives. I liked that she kicked butt and took names. She ran hospitals-- she was really more a manager than a nurse in this sense. Her work made others cry! Complete engaging and fascinating, it showcases the little known understandings of Nightingale and her REAL work. And how crazy her sister was, literally going mad for the fact that her sister should/shouldn't be doing this work and overshadowing her. And that Nightingale firmly believed that nursing was a woman's work. Favorite parts or quotes: From a respected mentor: "Go forward, if you have a vocation for that way of life; act up to your aspiration, and you will find that there is never anything unbecoming or unladylike in doing your duty for the good of others."On being frustrated "Why, oh my God, cannot I be satisfied with the life which satisfies so many people?"On her management style: Some unhappy nurses complained about Miss Nightingale's curtness. One day, a senior nurse among the Anglican sisters, a Miss Jones, advised Nightingale to encourage the women and treat them kindly. Nightingale replied that she had no time for such trifles and hurried off to her next task. But Jones' words sank in, and Nightingale tried harder to be a considerate leader. A friend of the family's quote "It is beautiful only to do the thing we are meant for."

Writes about Reading Florence Nightingale: The Courageous Life of the Legendary Nurse BookThis is nicely organized in chapters by roughly chronological order and written in a style that makes it nearly story-like while imparting details of Florence Nightingale's life and works. There is a decent notes section for each chapter (all at the back of the book) as well as a selected bibliography and index. Many pictures and portraits from Florence's life and the era are included (even some drawings done by her sister Parthenope); some in color and some in black and white or sepia. They add context and break up the pages nicely. Due to the story-like nature of the text, you also get a good flavor for the history of Europe and the World during her life: a bit on customs, dressing, politics and cultural happenings (as well as war and medical practices) which could appeal to fans of Downton Abbey style shows/stories.Anything you didn’t like about it? NothingTo whom would you recommend this book? Good for getting a solid (though aimed a younger audiences) biography of Florence Nightingale and moving beyond her couple years as a war nurse. Could be a great book for younger biographical reports or for older readers interested in this fascinating woman.FTC Disclosure: The Publisher provided me with a copy of this book to provide an honest review. No goody bags, sponsorship, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

Writes about Download Florence Nightingale: The Courageous Life of the Legendary Nurse PDFFeatured in on . I've been eager to learn more about Florence Nightingale ever since I did a study abroad in London many years ago. Many have lauded Florence Nightingale's accomplishments, but I did not know how much resistance toward her life's work she received from her family. It was also fascinating to gain a little more insight into Nightingale's personality. She was not easy to get along with! does an excellent job establishing historical context in her book. I enjoyed hearing about the other famous historical figures that Nightingale knew personally. was out November 8, 2016.

Writes about Read Online Florence Nightingale: The Courageous Life of the Legendary Nurse Book PDFLibrary copyWe're going to chalk this one up to a bad evening. I love biographies, I love stories of strong, influential women, and I think this book has a lot going for it. I just couldn't get into it. The good side: I was impressed by the number of pictures and illustrations this one had. I think these are important for students, because it both engages and informs them. When dealing with the 1800s, there are often few illustrations that can be used. This is clearly well researched, and I am definitely ordering a copy because (oddly) I don't have a book about Florence Nightingale, and this is a very solid biography. The down side: This read more like an adult book. Instead of giving just the essentials, it had frequent digressions into relatives like "Mad" Peter, Florence being in a "torpor" in Egypt, and other things that weren't really informative or interesting. Since I once read an almost 400 page book on Cadbury chocolate (Chocolate Wars), I'm going to attribute my disengagement up to a bad evening. Everyone else seemed to really like this one.

Writes about Download Florence Nightingale: The Courageous Life of the Legendary Nurse PDFAn interesting and well researched account of an influential historical woman. My knowledge of Florence Nightingale before reading this book was rather limited. I knew that she was a famous nurse, but knew very little about just how much she did for nursing and medical practice. She literally created the standards for hospital design and the importance of sanitation in military and peace time hospitals. Her devotion to her profession was astounding, but it also took over her whole life. At just 160 pages, this book packed a lot of information in a little package while including many pictures, drawings, and other visuals. This makes it excellent for reluctant readers.

Writes about Reading Florence Nightingale: The Courageous Life of the Legendary Nurse BookOutside of knowing that Florence Nightingale was known as the Lady with the Lamp and that she worked in the British Army hospitals during the Crimean War, I knew nothing else. So I picked Florence Nightingale: The Courageous Life of the Legendary Nurse by Catherine Reef to read. I learned that Florence Nightingale had a very difficult life because she went outside of the social norm at the time In England to work. She came from a wealthy family and was expected to marry, have children and take care of her family. She was not supposed to be interested in math, engage in the hard work of cleaning or work under deplorable conditions. She felt that she had a calling, she studied subjects not intended for the gentle sex. she worked long hours, often 20 hours a day in caring for the sick and injured. She was different as a child, she rescued injured animals and nursed them back to health. Not bending the customs of the day disappointed her parents and caused her sister to think ill of her. She did not get the support that she wanted from her family but she went on and pushed nursing as a profession into a career of respect. She recognized the benefits of clean clothing and fresh air and left her stamp of greatness on nursing. The author writes about Florence Nightingale objectively and gives much insight to her decisions and her beliefs. Well researched and profusely illustrated, this book gives us many insights into her character and distinguishes between the myth and the reality of this woman.I highly recommend this to all who are interested in important figures in history.I received this finished copy by making a selection from Amazon Vine books but that in no way influenced my thoughts or feelings in this review. I also posted this review only on sites meant for reading not for selling.

Writes about Read Online Florence Nightingale: The Courageous Life of the Legendary Nurse Book PDFCovering more than just her "Lady with a Lamp" days, this biography of Florence Nightingale is a full and nuanced look at an inspiring woman's life. I came away with a new appreciation for this female trailblazer, even if it wasn't the most compelling biography I've read.

Writes about Read Online Florence Nightingale: The Courageous Life of the Legendary Nurse Book PDFA balanced take on the life of Florence Nightingale. I had no idea that she did so much for nursing and for women! Like most people, I was only familiar with the popular Victorian "Lady with the Lamp" story, but Florence Nightingale did so much more than that! With much help, she revolutionized war nursing and medicine, began the first relatively modern nursing school, and effected great change in the role of women through her own successes. She was intelligent, educated, and very driven. She was also irritated by the constraints placed on her by her sex and her status, unwilling to change her plans and goals in order to help her own family's future, and very bossy.I recommend this book to those in search of an interesting and informative biography.

Writes about Read Online Florence Nightingale: The Courageous Life of the Legendary Nurse Book PDFFlorence Nightingale, celebrated nurse of the Crimean War, was born into a very wealthy family, so, her wish to be a nurse was met with a great deal of negative scrutiny. She should marry well and be a socialite! But Florence would not bow to the conventions of the wealthy. She volunteered, she trained, and transformed healthcare, often paying her own way. She continued to work with the government and the military improving conditions of both the patients and the nurses for the rest of her life. This is a truly inspiring story, well written and researched. Includes pictures, a bibliography and index. An excellent source for a biography project.Cross posted to CHECK IT OUT!

Writes about Download Florence Nightingale: The Courageous Life of the Legendary Nurse PDFFlorence Nightingale: The Courageous Life of the Legendary NurseBy Catherine ReefClarion Books192 pagesNov. 8Through years of history classes, the name Florence Nightingale has been imprinted upon my brain as a famous nurse. And yet, so little is taught about Nightingale that she begins to take on an almost mythical presence in history. Fortunately, Catherine Reef’s Florence Nightingale: The Courageous Life of the Legendary Nurse brings Nightingale out of the myth and into the realm of real history.Reef traverses Nightingale’s life from childhood, and her early inklings and interest with medicine and nursing, through her nursing work on battlefields, as well as her influence on the growth of the nursing profession throughout England and Europe.Much like our own Clarina Nichols, Florence Nightingale’s mission in life came at a young age. Her father encouraged Florence and her sister’s educations, at a time when educating girls was not a priority in England, but more of an afterthought. This allowed Florence to pursue her passion for taking care of others, though this was a passion that her own family dissuaded her from pursuing, causing Florence’s internal turmoil. Also like Clarina, Florence Nightingale was seen, by none other than pathbreaking doctor Elizabeth Blackwell, as someone who was “weakening the barriers of prejudice which hedge in all work for women.” It is in this revolutionary work as a nurse that young readers will identify with Florence’s desire for a life that her parents didn’t want for her. For a woman in nineteenth century England, or nineteenth century anywhere, this was an act of rebellion. With a few minor exceptions, the author does not attempt to connect too much with modern-day teens. Instead, she writes for this genre as though its young readers are more like adults than children. Reef does write that “the same concerns kept running through her mind: her ambitions, her family’s expectations, and the impossibility of satisfying both.” These are feelings that most everyone feels at some point in their lives, but particularly young readers on the cusp of their high school graduation. Or even college graduation…or even a year after college graduation…One thing I would have liked to know more of was Nightingale’s impact on nursing, even into the twenty-first century. Reef writes that “beloved in life, [Nightingale] became a legend in death.” I wish the author had expounded upon that statement in some kind of epilogue about Nightingale’s legacy.(Originally appeared in the Q Review section of quindaropress.com)

Writes about Download Florence Nightingale: The Courageous Life of the Legendary Nurse PDFReadable, some random historical speculation, a lot of talk about Crimean nurse politics rather than the cool stuff like saving people's lives. It was ok and I read the whole thing.

Writes about Reading Florence Nightingale: The Courageous Life of the Legendary Nurse Book"The Lady with the Lamp"The common perception of Florence Nightingale is that she heightened the level of cleanliness and care for soldiers injured during the Crimean War. But that is just part of her contributions to medical care, as author Catherine Reef spells out in this biography for younger readers.Nightingale had an academic bent from an early age, and she used her knowledge to improve the discipline of nursing and analyze its impact in a way that turned it into a profession with documented results. Reef spends a lot of time building context for Nightingale's determination by detailing her youth and her family's "station" and expectations. While this is all helpful information, the sections of the book that focus on Nightingale's service in and after her time in Crimea are more immediately interesting. It is sobering to think that although her own health was harmed during her service overseas -- and that she battled with bouts of resulting ill health for the rest of her long life -- Nightingale pushed herself and her network of helpers relentlessly to chronicle and tabulate the human cost of inattention to what we take for granted today as the basics of cleanliness and sanitation. This book is thoroughly researched and footnoted. It has a wealth of illustrations, from portraits and drawings to images of historical settings and even reproductions of pie charts illustrating the various causes of death in theaters of war.
