Strangely enough, and I say strangely because honestly I don't read a lot of this kind of non-fiction, this was a very enjoyable and interesting book.Mostly because the author had an engaging voice throughout that had me alternately chuckling at the foibles and follies of forensic work and surprised that certain people inspired other literary notables.

I'm always a sucker for these forensic books as I work closely with some of our forensic science teachers and I'm always looking to add to the booklist. This one will be no exception as it presents a very solid look at all of the history of forensic science as it developed with a few cherry-picked examples demonstrating their discovery or use. Some obscure cases that I learned something new and some famous or generally understood cases as well including popular references to television shows (what to believe and not believe), but also for students being able to provide some context to their learning, so for this I also enjoyed. There is quite a bit of backmatter including a good glossary and notes, plenty of pictures (though generally of people who discovered things rather than crime-scene photos that might disappoint some), but overall a great introduction with a pinch of detail to pique anyone's curiosity.

SCIENCE IS SO AMAZING! Yet the fact that there are still sooo many cold cases now suggest that our knowledge of forensic science is still lacking. That, or there really are so many perfect crimes. Nevertheless, the evolution of forensic science is awe-inspiring. This was a really enjoyable read. The featured murder stories are well-narrated; though all are short, they never lacked the essential details and are very informative. Featured in on . uses historical cases to tell the history of forensic science and criminal investigation. This book is absolutely fascinating. (Although it is a bit macabre at times; we are dealing with criminal investigations after all.) I loved how Heos used actually cases from history to steer the book and show the progression of forensics as well as its limitations. In many ways, this book is demystifying, in that it takes a profession that has become so popularized through TV and novels and gives us the gritty details and actual facts. Despite the abundance of names and medical details, Heos delivers a very readable, intriguing book. was out October 4th, 2016.

I wasn't always sure where this book was aimed out. I have a on-going fascination not just with forensic science, but more specifically the birth of it - those moments in which scientists and detectives converged and stumbled upon some scientific truth or test or happenstance which lead to real results and answers. In her book, Hoes breaks each chapter into a specific are: blood analysis, gun shot, fingerprints, dna. It reads more like an introduction then a historical chronology (which would be fine, but I had been sucked in by the "from Sherlock Holmes to DNA" language). As each one of these categories of forensic science could and does produce tomes of research, history, theory and practice, it is not surprising that each chapter feels introductory as well, as if we are merely scrapping the surface of each topic. Though the many interspersed mini-crime stories are entertaining and interesting enough to keep the reader going, in the end, I feel as if Heos is just presenting a simplistic intro guide to the start of a much larger, longer collection of other works. Nothing wrong with that, just not sure if it is what she meant.

this was REALLY GOOD. it's extremely interesting and easy to understand because as well as present facts, bridget heos also gives examples of what she means.she explores cold cases, the discovery of ancient bodies in ice and in bogs, wrongfully convicted individuals and murders solved by primitive and modern forensic science. it's YA which i think contributes to the fact that it's so easy to follow, and it makes me wish more adult non-fiction was more interesting and less dry and hard to follow. blood, bullets, bones really peaked my interest in exploring more topics related to forensic science.definitely want to read more by bridget heos!

Meant for a YA/child audience, this is accessible and full of just the level of shock, death and police procedure that will whet their appetites, whilst still being readable (with new cases, chemicals and history) for the adult reader as well, like myself.Once or twice the language strayed into teenage slang, and new cases weren't separated with paragraph spaces to indicate this. Apart from this, the writing moves along at a pace and is easy to follow as cases of historical note in the field of forensic science build a picture of how the practice has developed from its earliest days.Famous cases like Dr Crippen and Jack the Ripper are here, but also cases of marital poisonings, twins and fingerprint mysteries, early analysis of bullets. It's fascinating to see how forensic science began, how individuals made advances and made it the detailed and invaluable one we know today.Great use of case studies, from various locations and stratas of society. I learned a lot about the history of forensic science that I was ignorant of formerly. The inclusion of a detailed glossary at the end is also valuable to the target reader.With thanks to Edelweiss for the advance copy, sent for review purposes.

I absolutely loved this book! It's a great introduction to forensic science. It's clear and concise, easy to understand yet incredibly interesting. I couldn't put it down but it also didn't give me nightmares, which is nice since I was reading the book before bed. I think my only complaint about the book is that sometimes it seemed to jump from one point to another. But I did love all of the stories!

I was fortunate enough to win an Advance Readers Copy of this interesting textbook on forensic science. As a writer, I am reading this very slowly to absorb much of the content as it will help me in my own area. I am enjoying the well written mix of data and examples of cases which went either way, correctly analyzed or not and the idea that the science crosses oceans in its development.It is illustrated, which provides even better understanding.

The cases chosen for review include a fair number of the usual suspects - Sam Sheppard, Jack the Ripper - but also a number of cases I was not as familiar with.
