There’s nothing I love more than a book that makes me love a genre I usually can’t seem to enjoy reading about.Time-travel has never been my go-to genre. I normally stay way away from it, because I never liked how it seems to always create a hundred misunderstandings or mishaps in a plot. Plus they’re usually very predictable. But ‘‘Saving Hamlet’’ doesn’t rely on the time-travel theme. It serves the plot but it’s NOT the plot. It helps Emma—the heroine—realize some things about herself and gain more confidence. And it’s also used to grow a mild ‘‘coming-of-age’’ theme in the story. It’s definitely original. And it’s got humour, too. Emma thinking that her new pixie haircut was the catalyst for all her adventures made me realize how such a simple thing as a haircut can be the signature of a book, if you know what I mean. When I think ‘‘Saving Hamlet,’’ three phrases come to my mind: Shakespeare’s Hamlet, awesome time-travel and Emma’s pixie haircut!Emma is a very relatable heroine. The reason why I’m not giving this a higher rating is because it tackles many subjects that have already been tackled a thousand times before: unrequited love, love denial, petty friendship drama, gay best friend with homophobic parents… I actually really liked how open the book is about LGBT, but a lot of the contemporary situations in this book can be found in many, many others. And none of them are explored in extreme dept. I didn’t truly believe this story would have a ‘‘quadrangle’’ love story because those are extremely rare and hard to pull off. But Molly Booth manages to make it interesting and not at all annoying. So kudos to her. I want to see these characters again. All of them. So I hope the ending, which alludes to a future sequel or companion novel, isn’t meant to only deceive us into thinking that or for characterization purposes. I don’t like to be played with this way! Gah! But yes, good story, charming characters and gripping writing. | | | | |

I'm a sucker for all things Hamlet, so I was beyond excited to get approved for this. I really liked Emma. Her passion for theatre is new, but it comes across in her actions. The backstory was a little clichéd and perhaps not even necessary. I didn't think soccer or the mean girls were important aspects to Emma's life. I loved the back and forth. The idea of seeing a show at The Globe with Shakespeare there to have his hand in everything is like a dream come true. Cooke was adorable and the snippets we got from the past characters were intriguing. Yes, there were definitely parts that were overdramatic, but such is the life in high school. Overall, it was a quick and fun read. **Huge thanks to Disney Hyperion and NetGalley for providing the arc in exchange for an honest review**

I truly **loved** this quirky, beguiling, wonderful book!If you think an ordinary sophomore year in high school is hard, try adding a disastrous theater production, losing your best friend, and some accidental time travel into the mix. And Shakespeare. As in, the real Shakespeare, the guy with the goatee and the quill pen and the frilly shirt, walking around in Elizabethan England at the Globe Theater, where you also happen to unexpectedly find yourself.Put it all together, and Drama Club techie Emma Allen's got a massive problem. But she's not the only one! Everyone in the modern production of "Hamlet" at her high school has issues that seem insurmountable...but the key to at least some of them may lie in the Shakespearean past, or even in the lessons of the play itself.Author Molly Booth's celebration of friendship, love, drama and coming-of-age is at times a hilarious romp...but it's also a sensitive exploration of how to accept who you really are, in spite of the troubles and misunderstandings of people around you. She weaves parallels between the modern journey of Emma and her friends, with the age-old tale of Hamlet and his perilous, doomed passage into troubled manhood, with a very light --but sure-- touch. I found myself tense with anticipation of how Emma and her friends could possibly sort it all out. But here's a promise: no one dies at the tip of a poisoned sword at the end.And to complete my reading joy, Booth's deadpan humor was always waiting in the wings to make me snort-laugh on almost every page.Highly recommended! (I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)

An engaging, quirky, and fun-filled read, SAVING HAMLET was pretty much tailor-made for the recovering theatre major in me. The amusingly painful details of putting together a high school play are deadly accurate, the vibrant (and often narcissistic) personalities that populate the drama club uncomfortably true to life, and the Shakespearean scholarship woven throughout the book is utterly fascinating. Molly Booth writes authentically melodramatic drama kids with such sympathy, it actually helped me let go of some embarrassment I didn't even know I was still holding onto from my own days treading the boards.Booth's heroine, the endearingly self-conscious student stage manager Emma Allen, has a lot on her plate; trying to juggle temperamental actors, a controlling director who is losing control, a best friend whose life is falling apart at the seams, and a three-car pileup of cute boys she can't stop crushing on, she's pretty overwhelmed; and all that is she accidentally time-travels back to Elizabethan England, encountering William Shakespeare himself. What she learns from the past she brings back to the present, stepping up to the plate repeatedly, rescuing her friends and finding her confidence at the same time. She's capable and intelligent, ultimately realizing that not all three of the boys she likes are actually worthy of her attentions, and a lot of young women will find her character's journey inspiring. One of the things I found most refreshing about this novel was the fact that Emma is not an actor. There's no shortage of books, movies, TV shows, etc, celebrating young people who overcome adversity and find their voice while building up the courage to perform; but techies rarely get their fair share of accolades for all the work that they do, and Booth deserves a round of applause for turning the spotlight (see what I did there?) their way. If you like drama, time travel, or magical realism - or, really, just sweet and smartly-written romantic comedies - this book's for you.

Ahh...theatre geeks, Shakespeare, time travel...what's not to love about this book? High school sophomore Emma Allen is an ex-soccer player who recreated herself as a member of stage crew after a disastrous incident during her freshman year. She is still working out the kinks of her new identity when she falls through a trapdoor in the stage and finds herself in 1601 in London, England. In fact, she finds herself in the Globe Theatre during the first production of Shakespeare's "Hamlet." As she begins to travel back and forth in time, she must work out the tension caused by two crushes, one on modern day Brandon and one on Alex from the 1600s. This was a very fun read. It has it all: romance, adventure, fluid gender roles, etc. What an entertaining read!

Ohhh this is wonderful. A delightful Shakespearean romp with an Elizabethan world so full I could smell it (even when I wouldn't want to). Equally realized high school world with all the best reminders of my school plays!A squishy, happy, lovely book!

Well that was pretty fun and adorable (even though some things were left a little unresolved for my tastes). I kinda loved that I forgot that this contemporary YA had a twist with the time-travel and whatnot, because, when it happened, I was pretty pleasantly surprised. I loved that there was some diversity within the book and that it even had characters learning more about the fluidity of sexuality and some of their own ingrained sexism (Emma not thinking a boy could play Ophelia and then learning just how well a guy could play that character). I liked the friendships between the characters, even when they started to fracture and break, because it was believable (if a touch dramatic but they're in high school and theatre nerds so that scans). Emma was an enjoyable narrator to ride along with, even when she made mistakes or didn't speak up for herself enough; I really related to her and could see a lot of myself in her (as I was in high school, maybe not as much now). I loved how involved the kids were with trying to understand the text and their characters and just their interpretations, especially Lulu's take on Ophelia. That was some A+ critical reading/acting (and I wish we'd gotten to do more of that during my high school theatre career because it's just so fascinating to try and break down what the character's thinking or what the playwright might have been thinking and to then let that colour your performance). Overall this was just a really fun romp of a contemporary/fantasy YA that is perfect for theatre nerds and anyone who loves Shakespeare. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an early copy in exchange for an honest review.

Huge thanks to Molly Booth, Disney-Hyperion Publishers, and Netgalley for granting me early access to this title in exchange for an honest review! This in no way altered my read of or opinions on this book.I have a confession to make, penguins. Lately, I've gotten into the habit of only skimming a book's blurb once...and then going into the read basically blind. This is, in my opinion, the best decision I've ever made--because I never know for sure what to expect when picking up a book. It's also, often, an exciting adventure. Take THIS book, for instance--I forgot everything about the blurb...except that there was something to do with Shakespeare/Hamlet. Imagine my surprise--and delight!--when the plot REALLY got underway and the time travel began! What I guess I'm saying is, if you're the type of reader who lives for adventure, maybe you should think about adopting a similar habit.Which is a round-about way of saying I ADORED this read! Particularly the diversity. There are several key characters from the LGBTQIA communities--and they are possibly the BEST and most well-written characters I've come across in YA fiction recently. They are complex, well-rounded, and individualized; they are in NO way the "token" diverse characters so many novels fall into the habit of employing. Lulu and Stanley (the two) were also my FAVORITE characters from this book, though only outranking the rest by just a little. I blame their fiercely independent and snarky tendencies--they were just too awesome to NOT love immediately. The plot is multi-layered and interesting. While not necessarily filled with a ton of action, I found myself on tenterhooks throughout the entire read--always wondering what was going to happen next. There are so many life lessons/morals floating throughout, including: self-confidence; self-love; acceptance; and tolerance. While Emma is on a journey toward confidence in and acceptance of herself, the rest of the crew face their own struggles and life lessons. There is so much going on, from page one--but Molly Booth blended everything into a seamless, cohesive, heart-wrenching, hilarious journey. This was such a fun, awesome read--I am definitely impressed, and will be impatiently awaiting Molly Booth's next release. I recommend this to lovers of time travel, diverse characters, and realistically-written romances. Also, a love for Shakespeare doesn't hurt. Pick this book up, penguins--and let the giggle fest begin!

I loved so many things about this book. The narrator's kick-ass personality, resilience, and goofy sense of humor. The hardcore Shakespeare/theater geekery. The believable relationships, both friendly and romantic. The matter-of-fact treatment of cross-dressing, LGBT characters, and theatrical gender fluidity. The deft juggling of a contemporary story with an awesome, wish-fulfilling time travel subplot. But most of all, I love that this is a book about a teenage girl who learns to DO SOMETHING and do it well and with AUTHORITY. Specifically, Emma learns to be a stage manager—a traditionally masculine trade that isn't as glamorous as acting, but is every bit as necessary (if not more) to a successful show. I love how Booth emphasizes the hard work of putting on a play—with all the nitty-gritty details—and shows us how Emma overcomes past failures to take her place confidently running the show. I love that her mentor lives in the seventeenth century.Yes, there's also romance in this book, and it's cute and swoon-worthy. But Emma's priorities are always clear: The show must go on, just as it did in Shakespeare's day. I think teens who love theater (and some adults, too) will swoon over this book. And for high schoolers struggling with their first reading of , it'll be a helpful eye opener, because it lays out the play's most basic interpretive challenges in everyday, accessible language.I just wish I could SEE the opening-night production described here, because it sounds like a night of theater no one would soon forget. I was so happy to read this book as part of an ARC tour.

It's not just that Booth has created a fun, original spin on time travel, or Shakespeare, or drama kids. It's that she has done this was humor, heart, and a cool, fun sense of language. This was one of those books where I slowed down because I just needed to savor the complete and thoroughly delightful world this author has created. Encore!

This review originally published in . Rated 4.25 of 5Reading books and writing reviews is a passion, a hobby, but by profession I work in the theatre (and have for about thirty years) and so it should come as no surprise that I have a special affinity for books with a theatre theme. And as a member of the Children's Book Writers and Illustrators Society, I also really enjoy a good book intended for younger audiences. I'm delighted to say that this works and appeals to me on all the various levels. This story is about high school sophomore Emma Allen. Her drama club is planning to put on a student production of William Shakespeare's and Emma will be the assistant stage manager. But if something could go wrong, it does, and it starts with the casting when the school's best actor (actress) doesn't get the leading role and Emma has a crush on the student director who doesn't seem to know she's alive. But when Emma falls through the stage trap door and finds herself in 1601 London and working for Shakespeare himself, the production takes on a whole new dimension. One of the aspects that most impressed me with this book is the authenticity author Molly Booth puts into the world of theatre. As a professional stage manager, I rarely comes across books that truly understand and capture what it is like to work in theatre - specifically stage management. But Booth writes as if she's done this work, and not just for the local community theatre. Emma takes control, as she should, and learns a lot from the book-keeper with Shakespeare. She manages to grow as an individual and yet hang on to all the youthful energy and idealism of a teen. Booth really does a marvelous job.All the characters are unique and well drawn and it really does feel as though we are watching a group of high school students. Booth doesn't write 'down' to a specific reading level and teen readers should get in to this and think 'At last, someone gets what it's like!'The Shakespeare-time portions of the book ring true and I suspect Booth did a fair amount of research to get this right. If not, it was written well enough that I was properly fooled. The only part that doesn't ring true is the size and quality of a high school, student-directed production. I know that there are high schools that do some pretty massive productions, but I personally haven't seen any. And a five-hour production? I would also disagree with what one of the characters says: "Shakespeare is easier to read than it is to speak, and it isn't easy to read." Most professionals would tell you that Shakespeare is much harder to read. He wasn't intended to be read...he was intended to be seen/heard.I really enjoyed this book and would gladly read more from Molly Booth.Looking for a good book? is a well-written YA book from Molly Booth and is worth reading if you are a fan of YA or good fiction with a theatre theme.I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher, through Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.

I love all things Shakespeare, so I was super-excited to be able to read this one! It's a time-travel story, and those can be a bit unpredictable. I found this one pretty entertaining, though, in part because it allowed some contrast between play productions in Shakespeare's time and today. It also helped Emma figure some things out that would have taken her a bit longer without the magical trap door. The story is a quirky one, as you might expect in a novel about high school theater. The characters were pretty engaging, though, and I was hooked in pretty quickly. Everyone involved in the modern-day production has some issues to work through, and it's fun to see how that all works out. While there are plenty of romantic relationships in this novel, they're not the primary focus. Emma is. The different relationships help her to figure herself out more than anything else. The contrast between Emma and Lulu makes for a fantastic reading experience, too.I can't wait to recommend this one to some of my students.** Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

I RECEIVED THIS ARC IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW.I didn't know what to expect when I read the summary for this book. I adore Shakespeare and his work, so I was definitely excited for Emma to time travel to the actual Globe theater and witness him in his prime. Also, there is a boy involved. Well, a boy four hundred years ago and a boy in the present day. I wasn't crazy about Cooke, to be honest. He seemed younger than his details played out. Let's keep him in Shakespeare's world. I did like Josh, though. I definitely sensed there was something there from the beginning. It was cute and interesting to read their interactions. Although, I wish there had been a kiss between them. Kind of a bummer.I admired Emma and her passion for theater. I'm no theater dork, but I love plays. She handled the stage manager job perfectly and it made me proud of this fictional character in my hands! She rocked it!I really enjoyed this new novel. It's out now so go pick it up!

This is such a fun book. When I read the summary and it mentioned Shakespeare, I thought "oh no this is going to be boring or too difficult to follow." I am not a Shakespearean expert but the author definitely is! She does such a great job explaining through the story's characters and plot the many different theories of what the play and character Hamlet is about. Emma is 16 and loves theater. Her high school is putting on Hamlet and she is one of the stage managers. Things get stressful when Emma's best friend, Lulu, is cast as Ophelia instead of Hamlet and Josh, the jock, is cast as Hamlet. One night after rehearsal, Emma is alone on the stage trying to de-stress and accidentally falls through the trap door. When she gets up, she finds that she is not under the stage at her high school but under the stage of the Globe Theater in Elizabethan England. Emma at first thinks this is some sort of hallucination or dream but soon realizes that it is not. She has actually traveled back in time and is watching the dress rehearsals of Hamlet. Emma meets Shakespeare himself and other characters who teach her valuable lessons about love, life, and friendship. Emma makes several trips back and forth through time during the course of the book. The thing I LIKED most about the time travel aspect was that it wasn't complicated. Sometimes time travel plots are ridiculous and take over the story. This one did not. The thing I LOVED most was that I actually learned about the play Hamlet. I, like many of you I am sure, was required to read it in high school. I don't remember it much and it made very little sense to me. I would really like to see the play now that I know more about it. Saving Hamlet, was a fun read that will make you a Shakespeare fan by the end.

Time travel books are hard. This book does not dwell on the rule of time travel. We just accept it or we do not. I just rolled with it and went along for the ride. Because Emma does not concern herself with the rules or the science, I did not either. It started stong and was a steady book. Thanks to Net Galley for the ARC.

Very entertaining. The author did a great job weaving in the time travel/historical moments with the present considering this was not a sci-fi/fantasy novel by any means. I did feel as though she introduced some interesting themes regarding the main character's attitude and opinions on gender identity that she didn't completely follow through on, but were nice to see brought up none-the-less.

Fantastico! Brava! Bravo! Encore! Zugaben! ...and all that good stuff! Quirky, interesting characters! Emma, Stanley, Lulu, Josh, Brandon, Cooke, Wick, Haddock, and the bard himself -- this was definitely a character driven story. Emma is shy and insecure, but I find that endearing. I was rooting for her to get a chance to come out of her shell and discover her potential. I liked and could identify her. She is not very confident in her surroundings and in her actions at first, but she is totally secure in who she is (or at least who she wants to be). I had no doubt that she has enough confidence (and family support -- her mom is great!) to bloom.I liked Josh from the start, but I grew increasingly fond of him as the story went on. I appreciated his sincerity, honesty, and genuineness. I loved Stanley and Cooke! Both energetic, quirky, original, and fun! Lulu's still quite immature, and a drama queen, but she's talented and can learn from her mistakes. And Wick. Wick is just wonderful. He helps Emma find the confidence she lacks by giving her a chance to prove herself. Clues were dropped from the very start and then throughout about what had caused Emma's transition from beloved soccer star to insecure drama geek (her words, not mine ;) ), and I had tons of fun chasing after those clues to discover the true Emma.I really loved this story! What a fun idea! Vibrant, vivid, and diverse characters, whom I really felt I got a chance to know . Good character development and lots of it! Lots of fun surprises! Super! Encore! I have recently been on a time travel kick (I think I have read about 5 books that deal with time manipulation in some way this year and have watch several movies and shows on the subject) and was super excited to read another take on it with Saving Hamlet. This interesting thing about this book is it isn’t your run-of-the-mill time travel book, it was more of a contemporary with a time travel twist, which I really liked. Booth intertwines some serious topics throughout this book in a realistic and not in-your-face way. The most prominent of these topics was the one of gender roles. Traditionally, plays in Shakespeare's time were performed by fully male casts. When the main character's best friend tries out for the role of Hamlet, the director refuses and casts her as Ophelia instead (this happens within the first couple chapters). It was interesing how Booth compares the set gender roles our society has cemented both in Shakespeare's time and in ours. Overall, I surprised myself by how much I enjoyed this. I loved the interplaying times and how they affect the main character's choices and how it develops her character. Over the course of the novel, readers will discover that they too can emerge from a difficult place, persevere, and come out of it a stronger and more inspirational person.

Thanks to NetGalley and Disney Book Group for the arc of Saving Hamlet by Molly Booth. Emma wants a new start for her sophomore year of high school and she starts with a completely different hair style and buying the shoes she has wanted for the past year. Emma loves theater and is the stage manager for her high school drama club production of Hamlet. A trap door is cut out of the stage floor, without permission. The hole gets temporarily covered with cardboard and tape. Emma accidentally falls through the hole when no one else is at the theater. She ends up in Shakespeare's time, at the Globe theater, where Hamlet is being acted out at that very moment. She meets William Shakespeare and sees firsthand how he wants his plays to be. It is very interesting how different the acting and rehearsing processes are between past and present. Emma travels back and forth between the present time and learns a lot of helpful theater information and is able to help her friends with the modern day play. Saving Hamlet deals with friendship, working relationships, family and all of the issues that come along with it, and gender differences and difficulties, still keeping it a clean read.
